Adding a Mask from flat area node

This node creates a mask from the flat area of a terrain. The mask created has the same size and resolution as the input terrain. It is white where Instant Terra detects flat surfaces on the terrain and black elsewhere.

For example, for a terrain with a flat part (lake) in the top left and another on the right, as shown in the left image, generates the mask shown in the right image below.

To add a Mask from flat area node, right-click in the Graph Editor and select Create Node  > Mask Generation  > Mask from flat area or press the keyboard shortcut N-M-F-F.

Double click on the node to open its parameters:

This node has only one parameter: Sensitivity. Sensitivity depends on the input terrain and it useful for detecting lakes on real terrains.

Adjust the detection sensitivity on a scale from 1 to 10.

  • When the sensitivity is low, only the larger flat areas are detected, and they tend to occupy a small area.
  • When increasing the sensitivity, the detected area increases slightly.
  • When the sensitivity approaches 10, many very small areas can be detected.
